Purpose: Assists and instructs students with auditory, speech and language needs and promotes development of communication and language skills of the Ohio School for the Deaf students through aural habilitation services.
Provides auditory rehab, speech, and language therapy to students:
Instructs student(s) in auditory skill development, speech articulation development and language development using a variety of modalities (e.g., spoken English, ASL, total communication, AAC); Prepares and implements instructional material and case notes (i.e., individual or group, according to needs) for all IEP directed services; Collaborates with the classroom teacher to provide services in the classroom or in the therapy area that correspond with content standards for the classroom.
Assesses/monitors student results:
Uses audiological and speech/language evaluation results to design IEP goals and services to meet aural habilitation needs of students pre K-12+; Implements aural rehabilitation services and/or combined speech therapy services as prescribed in IEP to meet minimum requirements for services; Evaluates student progress frequently (e.g., quarterly Progress Reports); Communicates with parents, audiologist, SLP and teacher regarding student progress; Oversees use of hearing aid, FM system and/or cochlear implants for caseload students; Selects and creates learning activities for students which are age appropriate, aligned with students' needs and interests and aimed at eliciting desired learning results; Uses strategies that align with current best practices and research-based principles;
Establishes and maintains professional rapport with students, parents and colleagues; Engages students using positive behavioral supports; Participates in student staffing and IEP meetings.
Maintains communication and records:
Submits monthly billing for Medicaid School Program; Contacts parents and/or local school district regarding student progress; Keeps data and records student progress in case notes and progress reports.
Assists OSD in carrying out its mission:
Serves as a member of the ETR team; Reports cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to legal authorities; Creates a climate that promotes equity, safety, student learning, parent engagement and regard for communication needs and cultural preferences; Completes monthly billing statements for Medicaid reimbursement; Completes routine State employee requirements;
Provides support for other speech/language and auditory personnel; Provides support and training to classroom teachers in scope of practice areas (i.e. listening and spoken language, language disorders, dysphagia); Assists with school duties as needed (e.g., lunch duty, special duties) or upon availability.
Maintains professional development:
Maintains personal/professional knowledge and skills pursuant to State of Ohio speech language pathology licensure requirements; Keeps ODE pupil services license and/or registration up to date; Maintains current Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board License; Maintains certificate with ASHA (American Speech- Language Hearing Association); Attends workshops and conferences.

Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, community and co-workers using American Sign Language: Novice level on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) within 3 months of hire, with measurable yearly growth to Intermediate level within two years.
