Job Description

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for two, 9-month, continuing track (non-tenure) positions of Assistant Professor of Animal Science. Workload of each position is 95% teaching and 5% service. These are permanent, full-time positions. Continuing track faculty are eligible for promotion in academic rank and sabbaticals. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in support of majors in pre-veterinary medicine, animal biosciences, animal sciences, and the minor in equine science, depending on academic expertise, qualifications, and departmental priorities and programming. Courses may include anatomy and physiology of domestic animals, One Health, equine diseases and lameness, animal nutrition, animals and human culture, introduction to animal science, senior capstone courses in beef cattle and sheep production or dairy cattle management, study abroad in sustainable agriculture, forages and pasture management for livestock, and others.

The candidate is expected to actively engage in innovative scholarly activity related to instruction, including but not limited to teaching courses, participation in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking scholarly grants to enhance their teaching program, and sharing the results of successful innovative pedagogies through peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will participate in recruiting, mentoring, and advising undergraduate students. The candidate will join our highly collegial and collaborative faculty who routinely interact with other faculty members, staff, farm managers, students, administrators, and members of the public. 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have earned a Ph.D. in animal science or a related field (EdD/DVM/VMD degree also will be considered) and have significant training and experience working with agricultural/food animals. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in classroom instruction, student mentoring, and teaching scholarship. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience teaching animal science at the post-secondary education level.

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is one of the four departments in UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, with 18 full-time faculty focused in the areas of animal sciences and food sciences located in Newark and Georgetown, DE. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources includes a 350-acre agricultural experiment station and teaching farm, Allen Laboratory (biosafety level 3), and Lasher Poultry Diagnostic Laboratory. The primary research and teaching laboratory building (Worrilow Hall) completed a $38-million renovation and reopened in late 2020, providing state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching spaces for use by the successful candidate.

Departmental programs cover a wide range of scientific disciplines that support the safe and economical production of domestic livestock and quality foods, as well as the care, health, and use of companion animals. In the field of animal science, disciplines include virology, physiology, nutrition, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, engineering, biochemistry, genomics, and animal management. In food science, the department covers the disciplines of food safety (microbiology), food chemistry and engineering, and food processing and sensory analysis. The department is highly collaborative across college, department, and institutional lines and is integrated with Cooperative Extension.

University of Delaware salaries and fringe benefit packages are highly competitive. Salary is commensurate with experience.
