Description

Menlo’s Upper School (grades 9-12) is seeking a licensed and skilled Mental Health & Wellness Counselor to join us from the end of October 2025 into May 2026. This professional will have specialized experience in school-based teen counseling. In addition to the counseling aspect of the work, the role also includes: collaborating with a team of counselors across the Middle and Upper School divisions; possibly teaching a 9th grade seminar class; collaborating on parent education; and advising, as needed, on the scope of Menlo’s overarching social-emotional and wellness programming for students.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential individual and group counseling to students, including social-emotional support, educational guidance, mediation, crisis services, and coordination of co-curricular activities.

  • Work collaboratively with two additional counselors to support the mental health needs of the Upper School student body, aligning efforts with the Middle School counselor as needed and ensuring awareness of the 6-12th grade trajectory.

  • Share our dedication to cultivating an ever more heterogeneous and inclusive community while committing to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Help students resolve teacher and classroom concerns and assist students in developing self-advocacy and problem-solving skills.

  • Consult with and assist teachers and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students navigate academic, social, and emotional challenges.

  • Maintain local partnerships with therapists, community partners, and mental health organizations.

  • Participate weekly as an advocate in Menlo’s comprehensive Advocacy programming.

  • May teach or co-teach a 9th grade seminar class on adolescent wellness and balance.

  • Serve as a Club (co)advisor in one or more of Menlo’s clubs/affinity groups.

Required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience include but are not limited to:

  • A Master’s or Doctoral degree in counseling, school psychology, clinical psychology, or school social work (LMFT, LCSW, MSW, PPS, or certified school/clinical psychologist) is required.

  • 3-5 years of prior school counseling experience at the high school level or equivalent strongly preferred.

  • Experience with individual and group counseling, educational programming, and crisis management.

  • Knowledge and experience providing culturally responsive treatment and the desire to meaningfully improve upon the experience of historically underserved students in independent school contexts.

  • Genuine love of high school-age children and a desire to work with all types of learners.

  • Being a positive and contributing member to our campus community as a whole, inside and outside of the counseling office.

  • Extensive knowledge of ethical and legal considerations related to counseling practices.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills and proficiency in communicating and engaging effectively with a wide range of constituencies.

  • Candidates must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Proficient in the use of technology.

  • A desire to work in a highly collaborative environment.
