Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Accelerator Physics Group in the Research Accelerator Division, Research Accelerator Division,  Neutron Sciences Directorate at  Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

The qualified candidate will study, simulate and develop software for beam transport and beam dynamics in SNS superconducting linac, beam transfer lines and SNS Ring. The qualified candidate will also design software to monitor and control the SNS accelerator in real time and work in SNS Control Room.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and operate Control Room software for SNS accelerator tuning and monitoring.
  • Conduct beam studies on the SNS beam to calibrate simulations and validate predictions.
  • Develop and benchmark PyORBIT code.
  • Participate in scientific conferences, workshops, meetings and publishes results in the form of SNS technical notes and memos, workshop and conference proceedings, and scientific journals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in physics or related discipline completed within the last five years.
  • Knowledge of Python programming language.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages (especially C++), version control system (Git) and software development practices including code design, documentation and testing.
  • Familiarity with optimization methods including Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
  • Any experience with computations on GPUs.
  • Working knowledge of Linux command line and general understanding of Linux OS.
  • Experience working with an accelerator, such as working in a control room, conducting accelerator-based experiments, and performing accelerator simulations.
  • Some experience with data acquisition in large physics experiments.
  • Familiarity with EPICS - accelerator control software.
  • Experience with Particle-In-Cell codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results through reports, publications and presentations.

 

Applicants cannot have received their PhD more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
