Job Description

Description

EnergyWorks is a privately held oil & gas exploration and production company headquartered in Northwest Arkansas. We focus on acquiring and developing cash-flowing, PDP-heavy operated assets primarily within the Permian and Mid-Continent regions. With assets spanning five states (Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Texas), we strive to responsibly develop America’s energy resources — balancing growth, risk, and stewardship.

As Controller at EnergyWorks, you will play a critical role in ensuring financial health, operational transparency, and strategic support across our multi-basin asset portfolio.

Position Summary

The Controller will lead day-to-day accounting operations, ensure reliable and timely financial reporting, maintain internal control discipline, and provide meaningful financial insights to support strategic growth and acquisitions. You will partner closely with the CFO, operations teams, and leadership across basins to enable scalable, compliant, and efficient financial management.

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Manage the accounting function: general ledger, well accounting, joint interest billing, revenue accounting, accounts payable/receivable, royalty accounting, and intercompany accounting.
  • Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP, tailored to the needs of a private E&P company.
  • Oversee consolidation of results across multiple basins and business units, including operated and non-operated interests.
  • Coordinate and lead external audits and reviews; serve as primary liaison with auditors and tax advisors.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

  • Lead the annual budget and long-range forecast process in collaboration with operations, reserves, and engineering teams.
  • Monitor actuals vs. budget/forecast, perform variance analysis, and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Support capital planning, cash flow modeling, and scenario analysis for acquisitions, divestitures, and project development.

Internal Controls, Compliance & Policy

  • Develop, maintain, and enforce robust accounting policies, internal controls, and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and tax requirements (federal/state mining/oil & gas, environmental, royalty reporting).
  • Oversee cost accounting methodology (e.g., accounting for exploration, development, and production costs) and ensure consistency with industry practices and internal standards.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of tax provisions, royalty payments, and other regulatory filings.

Systems, Process Improvement & Integration

  • Lead optimization of accounting and financial systems (ERP, production accounting systems, joint interest billing, financial consolidation tools).
  • Drive process improvement and automation initiatives to improve scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Facilitate integration of acquired assets’ financial systems, processes, and data consistency.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff, promoting professional development and accountability.
  • Work closely with operations, land, geology, engineering, and commercial teams to align financial goals with business initiatives.
  • Serve as a business partner: provide decision support, metrics, dashboard reporting, and insight to the executive team.

Requirements

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Active CPA (Certified Public Accountant) required.
  • Master’s degree or advanced accounting designation (e.g., CMA, CGMA) is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior accounting or controller role.
  • Prior experience in the oil & gas E&P sector is required (especially handling joint interest billing, royalty accounting, PDP assets, etc.).
  • Experience with multi-basin operations and integrating acquisitions in the upstream space.

Technical Skills

  • Strong command of ERP systems and financial consolidation tools (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Quorum, or other E&P accounting software).
  • Advanced Excel modeling and analytical skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP and accounting for oil & gas operations.
  • Familiarity with audit and tax processes in an E&P environment.

Competencies & Traits

  • Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insight.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills—able to work across functional teams and present to leadership.
  • Strategic thinker with a balance of big-picture vision and operational discipline.
  • Ability to operate in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment, managing multiple priorities and driving results.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary plus performance-based bonus
  • Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, vision
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off, holidays, continuing education support
  • Opportunities for professional growth and exposure to multi-basin operations and M&A activity
